Our Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8 Rental Assistance) provides rental subsidies to income-eligible households in Tompkins County. Participant households generally pay between 30-40% of their monthly adjusted income towards their housing cost and the program pays the remainder directly to the landlord by direct deposit on the first of each month. As an income driven program, each household must recertify their household and income annually. Housing Services staff perform Housing Quality Standards (HQS) inspections of each housing unit before rental assistance can begin and at least once per year thereafter.
Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own housing including single family homes, mobile homes or apartments. The housing unit must meet the requirements of the program for health and safety but are not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects. The owner must be willing to work with the program and agree to the terms of the Housing Assistance Payment Contract.
TCAction is a Local Administrator for NYS Homes and Community Renewal (HCR). Our program follows the guidance set forth in the New York State Homes and Community Renewal’s HCV Administrative Plan.
Waiting List: Applicants are ranked based on the time and date of receipt of the application form. Proof of legal domicile is needed at the time the application is submitted. All other documents are collected when the application reaches the top of the list. All correspondence is competed through the mail.
